La Jolla
Roughly translated to Spanish, the word mean "The Jewel." And
this bustling community, with its 13.46 miles of pristine coastline, certainly
is one of San Diego's finest and oldest jewels.
The first local land developer was Frank Botsford, who in 1887 bought 400
acres and subdivided them so he could sell them at auction.
In 1900, with a population of about 350 people, La Jolla's development would
receive a boost when the construction of a water main and the nearby Santa Fe
Railroad brought people in closer contact with this seaside hamlet. By 1920,
development and tourism had seen the population grow to about 4,000 residents
One of La Jolla's earliest and most prominent residents - Ellen Browning
Scripps - could certainly be credited with La Jolla's growth in size and
culture, paving the way for construction of a hospital, various parks and the
renowned Children's Pool.
The community is now a vital business center and home to many top-related
restaurants and shops. Over the years La Jolla has grown from a picnic spot for
San Diegans to one of the top addresses in the world.
